Mycenae as an archaeological visit
Mycenae is a Late Bronze Age palace centre whose monumental fortifications, Lion Gate and tombs make it a substantial excursion from Nafplio. The archaeological museum and Treasury of Atreus extend the visit beyond the fortified centre. Plan time for those different areas rather than treating the site as a single photo stop at the gate. The objects and buildings tell related parts of the story, but some famous finds are displayed elsewhere.
The excursions on this page have two distinct starting bases. Two begin in Nafplio, while the small-group minivan outing begins in Athens. If you are already staying locally, choose a Nafplio departure. For a broader comparison of routes from the capital, see the Nafplio day trips from Athens.

The Lion Gate, tombs and museum
The Lion Gate dates to around the middle of the 13th century BC. It belongs to the monumental entrance and defensive architecture of the palace centre. Look at the surviving stonework as well as the gate itself: the scale of the fortification is part of what distinguishes the visit. Tombs form another part of the archaeological landscape, and the Treasury of Atreus is included in the admission arrangement.
The museum offers a different way into the site through its finds. Important objects from Schliemann's excavations, including the original so-called Mask of Agamemnon, are held in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Other finds are in the Mycenae museum. Keep that distinction in mind if a particular object is the reason for your trip. Names associated with heroic stories offer cultural context, while the excavated palace centre and its material remains belong to the archaeological visit.
Admission and seasonal opening hours
Regular entry is 20 EUR and eligible reduced entry is 10 EUR, covering the archaeological site, museum and Treasury of Atreus. This is the Mycenae admission arrangement, rather than a ticket for a wider circuit of Argolis sites. Bring original identification and any necessary eligibility documents for a reduced or free ticket.
The regular winter calendar runs from 1 November to 31 March, with opening from 08:30 to 15:30. Last admission is 20 minutes before closing. April opening is 08:00 to 19:00, while the regular May to August timetable is 08:00 to 20:00, subject to closure dates. In September, closing is 19:30 in the first half and 19:00 in the second half. For an October visit, check the calendar for your chosen date before fixing the return journey.
Closure dates include 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Easter Sunday and 25 and 26 December. A seasonal opening table should be read together with those exceptions. Allow the museum and tomb visits their own place in your programme, especially when using the shorter winter day.
Comparing the three excursion formats
The six-hour excursion from Nafplio includes transport to and from town, an English-speaking driver, liability cover and taxes. Admission tickets and a professional licensed guide cost separately. This is a transport-led way to reach the archaeological destinations, suited to visitors who want to explore the sites independently after arrival.
The private return-transport option from Nafplio lasts 4 to 5 hours. Its inclusions cover hotel or meeting-point collection, private return transport to ancient sites, onboard Wi-Fi, liability and taxes. Treat this as a vehicle arrangement when weighing your choices, and budget separately for site admission and any archaeological guiding you want.
The 10-hour small-group departure from Athens includes hotel pickup and drop-off, transport by air-conditioned minivan, an English-speaking driver and a professional guide at the destination. That combination suits visitors based in Athens who want the road journey arranged alongside guiding. Add the relevant archaeological admission to the day's budget rather than treating the transport package as a site ticket.
Epidaurus as a combined destination
Combined archaeological outings can include the Asklepios sanctuary at Epidaurus alongside Mycenae. Its large ancient theatre is part of the wider sanctuary. For that visit, use Epidaurus theatre and sanctuary. Follow each excursion's stated route when choosing the combination, and distinguish the time travelling between places from time exploring them.
Planning from your Nafplio base
Mycenae is an inland excursion rather than an extension of a walk around Nafplio's old town. Keep the town's fortresses and waterfront for a separate part of your stay, using the Nafplio sights guide. For other outings from the same base, see tours in and around Nafplio. Choosing by departure point helps keep your accommodation, meeting arrangements and sightseeing day aligned.
