Things to do in Nafplio, from town to coast

The things to do in Nafplio begin with understanding the landscape. Palamidi rises above the town, Akronafplia occupies the peninsula below it, and Bourtzi stands on an island near the harbour entrance. These are separate fortifications, each with its own approach. Between them, narrow paved streets, Venetian and neoclassical buildings and Ottoman fountains give the old town its character.

Start by choosing whether the day centres on the streets and squares, a paid fortress visit or the coast. A brief stop can focus on the town and harbour views; a fuller visit allows time for the separate approaches. Use the history of Nafplio to connect the architecture with the city's changing role, including its period as capital from 1827 to 1834.

Palamidi above the town

Palamidi is a Venetian Baroque fortress with eight bastions. Completed in 1714, it passed to the Ottomans in 1715 and to the Greeks in 1822. Its position on the hill makes the approach part of the visit: the western staircase is different from the road to the eastern gate. Driving to the gate still leaves the internal terrain to consider, so choose the approach according to your walking ability.

Regular admission is 20 EUR, with reduced admission of 10 EUR for eligible visitors. The regular winter calendar, from 1 November to 31 March, runs from 08:30 to 15:30; last entry is 20 minutes before closing. Check the date-specific calendar for closure days. Bring water, sun protection and suitable shoes. If a vehicle-based visit is the priority, see private excursions for the Palamidi and Karathona format.

Bourtzi and Akronafplia

Bourtzi is the island fortress seen from the waterfront. It began as a Venetian fortification and later had Ottoman and Greek phases; in the 20th century it also served as a hotel. Visiting the monument involves a boat journey from Nafplio's harbour. Fortress entry and the boat are separate costs. Arrange the outward and return journey for your visit day, taking account of local operating conditions.

Akronafplia is the fortified peninsula rather than the island or the higher Palamidi fortress. Its surviving defences include a phase from the end of the 4th century BC, with later Byzantine, Frankish and Venetian alterations. Castello di Toro and the Sagredo Gate belong to this layered landscape. Follow the open approaches and respect barriers or closed sections when exploring.

Syntagma Square and the museum

Syntagma Square brings several kinds of history into a single town setting. The Venetian naval storehouse contains the Archaeological Museum, while the Vouleftiko occupies a former mosque and the Trianon is another landmark around the square. Looking at the façades is a different activity from entering the buildings. Check the individual visiting arrangements if an interior is central to your plans.

For a walk that puts these buildings in context, explore the historical walking tours. The city's streets also connect with the period of Kapodistrias, who arrived in 1828 and was assassinated outside Agios Spyridon in September 1831. A historical walk can therefore link architecture with the story of the early Greek state, rather than simply collecting fortress viewpoints.

Nafplio beach choices: Arvanitia, Karathona and Tolo

Arvanitia has pebbles and small stones, with rocks at the sides and metal sea-access ladders in places. The approach from town follows the rising road beside the Land Gate, with steps from the parking area down to the beach. This access deserves its own consideration, especially if steps or slippery surfaces are difficult for you.

Karathona is described as sandy, with a sandy seabed and shallow water, and can be reached by road. Assess the conditions where you enter the sea rather than treating the general shore description as a bathing-safety promise. Tolo offers a separate fine-sand beach setting. Choose between these shores according to the surface and journey you want, while following current local bathing advice.

Arvanitia beach access and the coastal paths

The beach approach, the paved coastal circuit towards the harbour and the unpaved path towards Karathona are different routes. Rockfall-protection works were put out to tender in 2026. For a walk, use local access notices and barriers to establish the open route that day; avoid planning a continuous coastal circuit through closed sections. Decisions about a footpath should also be kept separate from access to the beach itself.

For a stay with more time to divide between town and coast, compare the locations on where to stay in Nafplio. Accommodation access, a beach visit and a fortress climb each involve their own practical choices, even when their names appear close together on a map.

Questions about Nafplio's sights

Are Palamidi and Bourtzi the same fortress?

Palamidi is on the hill above town. Bourtzi stands on an island near the harbour entrance, while Akronafplia is the fortified peninsula. Plan each approach separately.

Can I approach Palamidi by road?

The road reaches the eastern gate, while the staircase approaches from the west. Consider the terrain inside the fortress as well as the journey to the entrance.

Which beaches are sandy?

Karathona is sandy with a sandy seabed, and Tolo is described as fine-sand. Arvanitia has pebbles and small stones with rocks at the sides.

How should I plan the Arvanitia walk?

Distinguish the beach access from the harbour circuit and the path towards Karathona. Follow local signs and barriers for the route open on your visit day.
